Lashinda Demus took first place in the 400-meter hurdles Thursday night in the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
The 28-year-old Palmdale resident regularly trains at College of the Canyons in Valencia.
The fist American to win gold since 1995, Demus bested the reigning world champion, Jamaica’s Melaine Walker, with a time of 52.57, breaking the American record of 52.61.
Her previous best in world competition was silver, which she achieved in 2005 and 2009.
Demus was the third American to win gold so far in Daegu.
Canyon High alumna Lauren Fleshman (1999) competes Friday in the 5,000-meter finals after finishing fourth in the second heat.
