A Santa Clarita resident was found guilty Monday of perpetrating a hoax when he faked his own shooting at a Woodland Hills school in January.
Jeff Stenroos, 31, of Valencia, was a Los Angeles Unified School District police officer on duty at El Camino Real High School on Jan. 19 when a Good Samaritan found him lying on the ground near his open car door and called for help.
Stenroos told Los Angeles Police officers he was shot in the chest by a car burglary suspect while he was patrolling the campus perimeter. More than 500 law enforcement officers responded and conducted a 10-hour search.
LAPD robbery-homicide detectives determined Stenroos faked the shooting. He was indicted for insurance fraud for seeking medical treatment for injuries he never sustained. The following week, Stenroos checked himself in to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with complaints of pain, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
Judge Richard Kirschner of the Van Nuys Superior Court found Stenroos guilty of insurance fraud, workers compensation fraud, preparing false documentary evidence and planting false evidence, all felonies. He was also convicted of a misdemeanor charge of falsely reporting an emergency. Kirschner has yet to rule on one count of filing a false police report.
Stenroos had been out on bond but was taken into immediate custody following the rulings. Kirschner ordered him to a state prison for a 90-day evaluation to determine whether he should be sentenced to prison or receive probation. Stenroos returns to court Dec. 14 for sentencing.

Hey Leon Worden,
Maybe you should proof read before posting this article. You wrote and I quote: “Stenroos told Los Angeles Police officers he was in the chest by a car burglary suspect while he was patrolling the campus perimeter. More than 500 law enforcement officers responded and conducted a 10-hour search.”
Did you catch it? I guess not… Stenroos told Los Angeles Police officers he was in the chest by a car burglary suspect while he was patrolling the campus perimeter.
You are missing that he was “shot in the chest”…..
