The first annual USTA Block Party Tennis Festival at College of the Canyons was deemed a huge success by all involved as the Santa Clarita community came out in full force in support of tennis.
The organizers of the event held Oct. 16 on the college’s six courts said the reason the day was such a hit with both adults and juniors were the different tennis organizations in the community that came together to promote the event. Local groups such as the Girls Scouts of America, the Santa Clarita Boys and Girls Club and local tennis organizations like the Santa Clarita Valley Tennis Aces joined in with nearby tennis shop First Serve, Sports Chalet and the Paseo Club for a festive day of tennis, which included an appearance by local pro circuit professional Thomas Shubert who competed in the Beat the Pro competition. Also making an appearance was ambidextrous player Roger Garland.
A USTA Tennis On Campus exhibition match was held with top club players at Pepperdine facing off against Loyola Marymount with the Waves coming out on top to win the inaugural Cougar Cup Trophy, presented by Len Mohney of College of the Canyons. “The Waves got us this time, but we’ll be back,” said Tennis Aces’ Jocel Alcedo, a former LMU player who organized the exhibition.
Participating organizations taking part in the Block Party not already mentioned included: AK Printing, Corner Bakery, dazzlemedesigns.com, Visual Hangups, Wilson Sporting Goods and 10sBalls.com.
