An 83-year-old Santa Monica woman was struck and killed Tuesday afternoon on State Route 14 as she tried to cross the freeway on foot.
The collision occurred at 1:50 p.m. across from the Via Princessa on-ramp to the northbound 14 Freeway in Fair Oaks Ranch.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, the woman, identified by coroner’s officials as Milly Ericson, was trying to walk across the freeway eastbound from the center divider when she was struck by a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by an 64-year-old man from Palmdale. CHP officials didn’t release his name.
The Corolla was doing 65 mph in the fast lane. The driver tried to take evasive action, but he struck Ericson, “hurling her into the No. 2 lane,” the CHP report said.
At the scene, the left front end of the gray or silver Corolla was smashed in and its windshield was shattered but not broken through, as if struck by a heavy object. The driver was uninjured.
Ericson’ss body lay in the second lane to the right. Soft cloth hospital-type sneakers were placed next to her body, which was covered by a white sheet while officers conducted their investigation.
Northbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at Via Princessa, rerouted along Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road to the Sand Canyon on-ramp. The northbound HOV and fast lanes reopened about an hour after the collision.
