Clay Kasdorf poured in 34 points and Coley Apsay added 28 as the Canyon Cowboys avenged an earlier loss to the Hart Indians with a 78-69 win Friday night at Hart High School.
Across the valley, West Ranch had to come from behind to defeat the Vikings 86-79 at Valencia.
Both Canyon and West Ranch finish the Foothill league at 8-2 and are co-champions of the Foothill League in 2012.
In the Canyon/Hart game, televised by SCVTV, Canyon had control throughout most of the game. The Cowboys (23-3, 8-2) led 39-30 at halftime and 54-53 at the end of the third quarter. But it was in that third quarter when the Indians (16-10, 6-4) made a game of it.
Hart sophomore Lewis Stallworth hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter, but it was his layup in the closing moments that gave Hart a 53-52 lead, their first since the beginning of the game. But Canyon’s Coley Apsay came down and buried a jumper in the final seconds to regain the lead for the Cowboys.
Canyon then quickly established an eight-point lead in the fourth which Hart could never cut into.
The difference was clearly Kasdorf as the 6-foot-3 senior had 11 in the first quarter and 20 by halftime. He hit a pair of 3’s and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line to go with his 11 other field goals for his 34 points.
The Cowboys shot 11-of-12 from the free throw line as a team.
The Indians were led by Stallworth’s 22 points, followed by 21 from Niko Cruz and 19 from Austin Maly. The Indians were 20-of-24 from the line and hit eight 3-pointers
The win also gives 12-year head Canyon coach Chad Phillips a league title in this his final year as the Cowboys head coach. Phillips is already the winningest coach in Canyon boys basketball history.
