Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man in connection with a shooting last month in Newhall.
Freddy Angel Trujillo, 27, was arrested nearly two weeks after a man was shot in the back of the head while driving his pickup truck on Newhall Avenue near Pine Street.
The incident occurred Jan. 13 at 10:27 p.m. One bullet struck the victim while he was behind the wheel. At the time, officials said the bullet did not come from another car, but from some other location. Deputies combed the area for hours after the shooting but came up empty.
Sgt. Dean Currie and his team of COBRA deputies at the SCV Station stayed on the case and ultimately identified Trujillo as the suspect. They made the arrest on the night of Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Trujillo was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement, indicating deputies believe he’s a gang member. It was unclear Thursday evening whether he was additionally charged with attempted murder, but he was held in lieu of $1.88 million bail and housed at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic pending his next court date March 13.
In 2002, a suspect with the same name and of the appropriate age was arrested in Newhall on suspicion of car burglary. In that case, Trujillo and an accomplice were captured after the car owner and his roommates on Walnut Street used a sword and a golf club to detain the suspects, who were armed with a baseball bat.
