The West Ranch baseball team put Valencia and the rest of the Foothill League on notice with an impressive, 2-1, win over the Vikings on Friday.
West Ranch starter JC Cloney silenced the explosive Valencia bats, giving up only three hits and striking out a career-high 11.
West Ranch scored two runs in the sixth inning. Gabe Perralta had an RBI single and Jake Miura hit a sacrifice fly.
The Hart baseball team kept pace with West Ranch with a 9-2 win over Canyon.
Hart took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and Nick Valaika drove in two runs for the Indians.
Saugus clobbered Golden Valley, 21-5. The Centurions scored eight runs in the first inning. Ruben Cardenas was 3-for-4 with a double. He scored three runs and drove in two.
In high school softball, West Ranch beat Serrano, 8-2, in the High Desert Classic at Lancaster City Park. Lauren Lindvall was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Janelle Lindvall drove in three runs and was 3-for 4.
The Wildcats beat Paraclete, 11-2, in their first game in the High Desert Classic. Keeley Walsh was 3-for-3, hit a home run and drove in four runs.
The Canyon softball team also won two games in the High Desert Classic.
Canyon beat Santa Monica, 7-2, in the first game. The Canyon girls followed with a 4-2 win over Quartz Hill in the second game. Kealie Doyle hit two solo home runs against Quartz Hill.
Courtney Ziese and Lexi Lotito also homered for Canyon in the High Desert Classic.
In high school swimming, the Hart freshmen and sophomores set three school records and won the 41st annual Southern Section boys swim relays.
The Hart boys won four races and scored 88 points. They won the freshman/sophomore portion of the meet by 26 points over Corona Del Mar.
The Hart boys were sixth in the varsity meet. The West Ranch varsity boys were 17th.
In baseball, the Dodgers and the Angels played to a 1-1 tie in a Cactus League called after six innings because of rain.
Juan Uribe drove in the only run for the Dodgers in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mark Trumbo knocked in the Angels run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
