1934 - Bouquet Canyon Reservoir, replacement for ill-fated St. Francis Dam & reservoir, begins to fill with water [story]
Bouquet Reservoir

It looks like the baseball teams in the Foothill League are moving up whether they like it or not.

The Foothill League lost its appeal of CIF’s decision to place the local high school baseball teams in the same division as Southern California’s biggest and most competitive schools. In a unanimous vote, the Southern Section Council will recommend the six baseball teams in the Foothill League remain in Division I.

West Ranch is the only team from the Foothill League ranked in the top 10 in Division I. They are No. 10. Mater Dei from Santa Ana is the top-ranked team in Division I.

In a related vote, the Marmonte League was also denied its appeal to move into the Pac 5 Division in football. The 10-team Marmonte League is set to move from the Northern Division, which includes the Foothill League, to the Pac 5 Division, the top division in football in the Southern Section.

On the field in high school baseball, West Ranch won its final game in the La Palma Kennedy Tournament, 6-3, over Jesuit. Josh Heinz was 1-for-2 and drove in two runs for West Ranch.

In other games in the La Palma Kennedy Tournament, Saugus beat Katella, 3-2. Roy Verdejo was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run. Valencia lost to El Toro, 3-1, and Canyon lost to Mark Morris from Washington, 4-1.

In the Anaheim Canyon tournament, Hart beat Marina, 6-4.

In high school softball, Canyon is on the road for a game against Culver City. Valencia begins play in the Michelle Carew Tournament.

In high school track and field, one of the biggest meets in Southern California, the Arcadia Invitational, begins today. All the teams from the Foothill League are entered.

In college baseball, The Master’s College is home for a game against Cal State San Marcos today.

In college softball, the College of the Canyons plays Bakersfield College.

In drag racing, Johnny Ahten, the captain at Fire Station 76 in Valencia, reached the second round of the NHRA Summit Racing Nationals in Las Vegas and lost to 801 Racing teammate Cody Perkins.

Ahten qualified 10th and beat Mike Austin in the first round of the Top Alcohol Dragster division.

The Dodgers lost to the Angels, 8-3, in the rubber game of the Freeway Series. Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo homered early in the rout.

The Dodgers open the season against the Padres in San Diego tonight. It will be Clayton Kershaw on the hill for the Dodgers against Edinson Volquez. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

In hockey, the Kings are home for a game against the San Jose Sharks tonight, but they will be shorthanded before the puck even drops. Jeff Carter is expected to miss the game with a bone bruise in his ankle.

The Kings have won three of their past four games and are coming off a 2-0 shutout over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

The game between the Kings and Sharks starts at 7:30 p.m.
