[Supervisor Mike Antonovich] – Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich released the following statement Tuesday:
Dr. Austin’s half-baked proposals miss the mark in protecting public safety and holding criminals accountable. The agenda of Dr. Austin and the ACLU are clear – shut down Mens Central Jail and release criminals into our communities.
While Mens Central Jail is old, shutting it down without a comparable replacement threatens public safety and makes a mockery of our criminal justice system.
Dr. Austin’s report has three major flaws:
* It falsely assumes that the drop in the jail population from a high of 20,000 to approximately 15,000 since 2008 was due to less crime and fewer bookings. However, the Sheriff closed over 4,000 beds as a direct result of a $128 million budget cut. Prior to the budget cut, misdemeanors were serving 80% of their sentences but after the budget cuts, they are serving 15% to 20% of their sentences;
* It bases the Sheriff’s future needs for jail beds on the current jail population and early release program which is wrong-headed given the influx of state felons under the governor’s realignment plan; and,
* It falsely assumes the county would use the Mira Loma Detention Facility which is under contract with the federal government and completely ignores the Sybil Brand Institute, an existing vacant jail facility.
