The West Ranch softball team has a comfortable lead in the Foothill League standings.

The battle for second place is another story.

West Ranch beat Golden Valley, 13-3, and has a two-game lead in the league standings.

Hailey Hineman had three hits and drove in three runs for West Ranch. Janelle Lindvall drove in two runs and had two hits.

The Canyon softball team jumped into the playoff picture with a 7-6 win over Saugus.

Canyon scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Courtney Ziese provided the big blow with a two-run double. She was 2-for-3 with two doubles.

The Hart softball team rallied in the seventh inning and beat Valencia, 6-3. Tracy Chandless hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and give the Indians the win.

Saugus, Valencia and Canyon are tied for second place in the Foothill League standings.

The Trinity softball team beat Summit View, 20-1, in a five-inning game.

Keali Masseto hit a grand slam for Trinity.

In high school volleyball, the Valencia boys completed another undefeated Foothill League season with a three-game sweep over Canyon.

The Vikings won their 12th league championship in a row and have a state-record 112-match league winning streak.

The Saugus boys went the distance against Golden Valley and won, 3-2. Colby Wilson had 19 kills for Saugus.

West Ranch knocked off Hart in five games, winning the fifth game, 15-13. Dalton Peck had 16 kills for West Ranch.

In college baseball, the College of the Canyons lost to Santa Barbara City College, 6-5 in extra innings, in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern Regional playoffs.

Santa Barbara scored in the top of the 16th inning to take the lead and win the game. COC pitcher John Salas went 11 1/3 innings and struck out seven. The only run he gave up was the game-winner in the 16th inning.

In the NBA playoffs, the Lakers beat the Nuggets, 104-100, behind another impressive performance from Andrew Bynum.

He scored 27 points and had nine rebounds and the Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 38 points.

Game 3 is in Denver on Friday.
