As part of her fundraising efforts for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, avid runner Sarah Rock (left) is hosting a trivia night this Friday on the patio of the Canyon Theatre Guild in Old Town Newhall.
She’s set an ambitious goal of raising $5,000 for the Society and if she does, she will be able to participate in a LLS Team In Training event, the Mayor’s Midnight Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska in June.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the competition, which will be run by Brad Rennels of Brain Twisters Trivia, will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include snacks, dessert and all games. A cash bar will be available and an opportunity drawing will be held for prizes that include restaurant gift certificates, tickets to “Chicago” at the Pantages Theatre, tickets to the San Diego Zoo, certificates for Pilates and spinning classes and other items.
All funds raised will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a charity close to both Rock and Rennels’ hearts. Rennels’ father, Brody, was a musician for the Canyon Theatre Guild before his death from leukemia.
But Rock’s efforts to raise money go beyond the trivial – she’s appealing to the fitness bunch to join her for a Tribute “ride” at Spokes Indoor Cycling on May 26. The event is actually a class that will be led by a Spokes instructor, accompanied by special music hand-selected for the class and will be followed by light snacks and conversation. The suggested donation is $15 and Spokes will donate 50 percent of the proceeds from any cycling packages sold at that event to LLS. Spokes is located at 26635 Valley Center Drive, Unit 106, 661-291-1196.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society receives no federal funding. In fiscal 2010, the group invested $72 million, which funded 103 new grants to researchers in academic institutions and $8 million in contracts through the LLS Therapy Acceleration Program. They support hundreds of research projects in 11 different countries, including the US and Canada. LLS provides financial assistance to patients, sponsors scientific conferences around the country, produces educational materials and videos and runs dozens of Family Support Groups nationwide.
