The West Ranch baseball team ran out of runs in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
The Wildcats lost to Corona, 2-1, at Blair Field at Long Beach State, ending one of the best playoff runs in high school baseball in the Santa Clarita Valley.
West Ranch starter Cody Bennett nearly matched Corona starter Daniel Pena pitch for pitch. Bennett gave up two runs on five hits and pitched a complete game.
Pena gave up one run on six hits and stymied the explosive West Ranch offense. It was the third win in the playoffs for Pena, who shut out Valencia, 3-0, in the wild-card round.
Corona will play Newbury Park in the Division 1 championship game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.
In college golf, Valencia High grad Max Homa, a junior at UC Berkeley, is tied for 98th place after the first round of the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship at Riviera Country Club.
He shot a 5-over 76 on the first day of the three-round tournament. UCLA’s Anton Arboleda leads the tournament with a 4-under 67.
The Cal men’s golf team is in 15th place, 10 strokes behind Alabama, the leader in the tournament.
In the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship, Thane Ringler from The Master’s College finished in 13th place after shooting 7-over in the four-day tournament at Creekside Golf Course in Salem, Ore.
His best round of the tournament came on the final day. He shot an even-par 72.
In soccer, the Santa Clarita Storm lost its second game of the season, 3-1, to the visiting Bay Area Ambassadors in a National Premier Soccer League game.
Andres Bueno scored for the Storm to give his team a 1-0 lead in the first half. But the Ambassadors scored the next three goals to win the game.
In hockey, Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final between the L.A. Kings and the New Jersey Devils is tonight. The Kings eliminated the Phoenix Coyotes to reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993.
The Devils, and goaltender Martin Brodeur, knocked out the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference finals.
The puck drops at 5 p.m.
