Off-road vehicle enthusiasts across the Santa Clarita Valley should be happy: They’ll get to go potty in sweet-smelling toilets if the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves the funding Tuesday.
The county is looking to match an earlier state grant and provide $116,500 in funding for the first phase of improvements to the OHV area off of Sierra Highway north of Davenport Road.
The initial improvements will include the replacement of two “blighted, dysfunctional restrooms” with dual-vault Sweet Smelling Toilets, installation of a another one-hole toilet, twelve 8-by-10 steel shade structures and at least 40 new trail signs.
The property is within the Angeles National Forest and operated by the U.S. Forest Service. The county is providing the funding because it considers it a good way to upgrade OHV opportunities for county residents.
“Currently, there is a shortfall of OHV recreation sites within Los Angeles County, resulting in a critical lack of OHV recreation opportunities for Los Angeles County residents,” according to a county staff report. “Due to the insufficient amount of OHV recreation areas, this is an excellent opportunity to rehabilitate and utilize an existing federal OHV area.”
The county funds will come from a kitty the supervisors established for that purpose in 1982.
