[L.A. County Parks] – The first-ever Champions for Health event for youth will take place at the JetHawks Stadium in Lancaster on Thursday, Aug. 2. Up to 400 kids enrolled in county and city park summer day camps in the Antelope, Santa Clarita, and San Fernando Valleys will be bussed into the stadium as part of an outreach effort by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and the Antelope Valley Partners for Health.
The goal of the Champions for Health event is to introduce and teach activities that participants can take home and to their neighborhood. Kids will participate in a fitness challenge and in games such as disk golf, junior golf, basketball, jump rope tricks, bike safety, rock climbing, hula hooping, and other sports. Additional activities will focus on nutrition and emergency preparedness/first aid.
Elementary and high school youth ages 5 to 18 who have participated in health classes on nutrition, safe food handling, hand washing, and food preparation will also compete in the 4th Annual AV Kids Cook-Off. The Cook-off encourages kids and teens to develop a tasty and nutritious snack or lunch using fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low-fat foods, while avoiding use of electric or gas ranges.
Sponsors for the Champions of Health event include the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation; the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health; Antelope Valley Partners for Health; University of Antelope Valley School of Culinary Arts; the Lancaster JetHawks; the Quartz Hill Women’s Club; the Antelope Valley Hospital Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program; the City of Lancaster Department of Parks, Recreation, and Arts; and Mama Vega Salsa.
