This week’s Wendy’s of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week is Kyle Cantu of Canyon. Kyle has a 4.4 GPA and scored an 1890 on the SAT. He WANTS to go to a major four-year university, but he is open to a community college after graduating from Canyon. Ultimately he wants to study math and most likely engineering.
“I’ve just always had an interest in how things work and I just always wanted to figure out how to figure out things like that,” Kyle said.
A defensive tackle on the Cowboys football team, Kyle isn’t planning on playing football in college. And while his options remain open with his college plans, he would prefer to stay close to home.
“I’m probably going to be staying in state, unless I got some kind of special full-ride scholarship or something like that,” he said. “I’m looking anywhere like Stanford, maybe up north (since) I have family up there. So I might apply to Berkeley or something like that.”
When it comes to football and academics, Kyle knows which will have a bigger impact on his life ahead.
“I don’t intend on playing football in college, but football is my life right now,” he said. “I spend more time with these people than I do my own family at some points in the year. But I think overall school (is more important) because that’s my career for the rest of my life.”
Kyle recognizes playing on the football team with a 4.4 GPA makes him a role model for incoming freshman. His message to those students is clear.
“If you’re some kind of an athlete you’ve got to work hard on your sports and keep your priorities straight,” Kyle said. “Make sure you don’t fall behind, do your work and just get it done.”
Congratulations to Kyle Cantu of Canyon High School, the Wendy’s of Santa Clarita Student-Athlete of the Week.
