I thought I would take this opportunity to share a few things we are working on at City Hall that may be of interest to you.
The City’s Capital Improvement Program is very robust this fiscal year, with several new projects planned. In Valencia, we are currently out to bid for the new Park and Ride Center at the McBean Transfer station. In Canyon Country, we are currently out to bid for the Lost Canyon bridge widening project. Very shortly, we will begin work on the Carrizo pedestrian bridge replacement project which will add a new steel truss pedestrian bridge, replacing the deteriorated timber pedestrian bridge, within the Valencia paseo system crossing Carrizo Drive near the Valencia Valley Elementary School. We also have several major landscaping projects planned for this fiscal year, including areas on Sierra Highway and Golden Valley Road.
Near and dear to my heart is our community’s youth. It is heart-breaking when we lose a young person and sadly, we’ve lost many to a variety of unsafe driving incidents. In Santa Clarita’s Central Park, the Youth Grove with its tree stumps, depicting young lives cut short by poor driving, stands as a stark reminder to always drive safely. The Youth Grove features the names of 82 local youth who lost their lives as a result of drinking and driving, speeding, falling asleep at the wheel, using the cell phone while driving or taking eyes off the road for a few moments. On Saturday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m., the City will host the 7th annual Evening of Remembrance at the Youth Grove in Central Park. This is one of those “teachable moments” we as parents can use to reinforce safe driving messages. I encourage you to attend. If you would like additional information, please call 661-250-3708 or visit http://bit.ly/youthgrove.
Finally, I want to cordially invite you and your family to attend the Grand Opening Celebration for the new Old Town Newhall Library on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:30 a.m. The new library is located at 24500 Main Street. We’ve got a terrific celebration planned including tours of the new library throughout the day and a street fair on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.santaclaritalibrary.com.
Thank you for your interest and participation in our City. I enjoy receiving your emails; please send them to fferry@santa-clarita.com.
