The Canyon football team was put to the test against Clovis West, but came out on top.
Canyon quarterback Cade Apsay threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns in the Cowboys 56-48 win on the road against Clovis West.
Receiver Drew Wolitarsky had a big night too, catching 10 passes for 129 yards.
It wasn’t such a good weekend for the other teams from the Foothill League.
Hart, the No. 1 ranked team in the Southern Section Northern Division, traveled to Orange County and lost to Tesoro, 10-7.
Valencia lost to Palmdale, 35-21, in its season opener. It was the first time Palmdale has beaten Valencia in eight tries. The Vikings had won their past six games in a row against Palmdale.
Saugus lost to Simi Valley, 19-12, after mounting a furious, second-half comeback. The Centurions were down 19-0 before scoring two touchdowns in the final 17 minutes of the game.
Golden Valley lost a heartbreaker, 24-20, to visiting Royal. The Grizzlies had an 11-point lead with a little over three minutes to play in the game. But Royal scored on a 97-yard kickoff return, then drove down the field to score the winning touchdown with 1:20 to play in the game.
The Santa Clarita Christian football team lost for the second week in a row, this time, 34-13, to Windward.
In college football, the College of the Canyons lost, 25-19, to Golden West College in overtime.
The USC Trojans opened their season with a resounding 49-10 win over Hawaii. Marquise Lee scored two touchdowns, one on a 100-yard kickoff return, and caught 10 passes for 197 yards. He was selected as the Pac 12 special teams player of the week.
In college soccer, The Master’s College women shut out Occidental, 3-0, to win their third game of the season.
In baseball, the Dodgers rallied to beat the San Diego Padres, 4-3, in extra innings. AJ Ellis drove in the winning run in the 11th inning. Andre Ethier tied the score with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
The Dodgers and Padres continue their series tonight. It will be Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers against Eric Stults for the Padres.
