Shea Richards scored both goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead The Master’s College past Biola 2-1 in the GSAC opener for both squads Tuesday afternoon on Reese Field.
The victory not only got the 23rd-ranked Mustangs (6-1-2) off to a good start in conference play but also ran their winning streak to three games and kept them unbeaten over their past seven matches. They haven’t lost since August 23.
Richards has been one of the primary reasons why the Mustangs are on a roll. The sophomore forward from Palmdale, California, entered the match as the GSAC’s leading scorer (seven goals and two assists for 16 points) and added to those numbers with two more tallies.
The first of those came in the match’s 17th minute (16:24) when she took a pass from Jasmine Benson (Corona, CA) and put it by Eagle goalie Marina Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead. Benson’s assist was her team-best fourth of the year.
That margin lasted all of seven minutes because Eagle Amanda Lillicrop evened things up at the 23:52 mark, scoring in unassisted fashion against Mustang goalie Ilyssa Espiritu.
Neither team scored the rest of the half and the shots taken by each team mirrored the closeness of the match. The Mustangs outshot the Eagles 8-7 over the opening 45 minutes with Rodriguez notching three saves while Espiritu came up with one.
Both sides had fewer chances in the second half, evidenced by a 5-2 shot advantage by the Mustangs and the more obvious result of no scoring.
So, the Mustangs, for the third time in 2012 went to overtime, hoping for better results than two earlier, double-overtime ties. Richards made sure that would happen as she scored just 2:52 into the extra frame, tallying off an assist from Gia Loza and sending her teammates and fans into a frenzy.
After three days off, the Mustangs return to the pitch on Saturday in search of their fourth straight win when they play at Arizona Christian.
