The City of Santa Clarita is teaming up with the non-profit agency Soles4Souls Inc. to collect and distribute shoes locally, regionally, and internationally for those in need beginning Nov. 1, 2012 through Jan. 31, 2013.

Residents are invited to drop off new or “gently worn” shoes at any of the City of Santa Clarita designated sites, which include:

* Santa Clarita City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard

* Santa Clarita Activities Center, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway

* Canyon Country Library, located at 18601 Soledad Canyon Road

* Old Town Newhall Library, located at 24500 Main Street

* Valencia Library, located at 23743 Valencia Boulevard

City employee Susan Caputo, an avid runner, is organizing the second annual Santa Clarita shoe collection effort.  Caputo learned about the organization while running the Los Angeles Rock and Roll half marathon and felt Santa Clarita could make a difference by supporting the shoe drive.

“So often we clean our closets and think to donate clothes, toys, and furniture, but shoes are not always on our list,” said Caputo.  “Soles4Souls helps communities like ours gather shoes some of which will be distributed right here in our City, which is a real blessing for families in need.”

The City of Santa Clarita and Soles4Souls will be collecting new or gently worn footwear and/or donations to make a tangible difference through the gift of shoes. By recycling gently worn shoes with the charity, discarded footwear will be given a second chance at life and redistributed to international and domestic partners.  Some of the shoes collected will be redistributed right here in Santa Clarita.

Soles4Souls has distributed more than 19 million pairs of shoes around the world with the help of partners like the City of Santa Clarita.  With 1 in every 4 adults in the world living in extreme poverty, basic necessities like shoes are simply unavailable.  In developing nations like Haiti, Honduras, and Tanzania, walking is the main form of transportation, and shoes can protect a person’s feet from cuts and infections.  Also, children in other parts of the world cannot attend school without a pair of shoes.

“We have always been proud to say we do our part to keep footwear out of landfills, and hopefully put them on the feet of someone in need,” said Buddy Teaster, CEO of Soles4Souls.  “Please join the City of Santa Clarita in this initiative to collect gently worn footwear, and possibly improve the quality of someone’s daily life.”

For more information on Soles for Souls visit www.giveshoes.org. To donate shoes in Santa Clarita, contact Deputy City Clerk Susan Caputo at 661-255-4334.
