On March 14, the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) observed a major milestone by commemorating its 50th anniversary with a day-long celebration at the Chancellor’s Office. University and Senate leaders gathered and shared stories about their experiences, insights about shared governance and history of the Senate. Founded in 1963, the ASCSU promotes academic excellence in the CSU; recommends policies to the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor on systemwide academic, professional, and academic personnel matters; and serves as the official voice of the faculties of the CSU in matters of systemwide concern.
“Today, we are celebrating the role of the Academic Senate in architecting the history and future of the CSU system in collaboration with all members of the CSU family,” said Dr. Diana Wright Guerin, ASCSU Chair.
Featured speakers—including Dr. Harold Goldwhite, Cal State L.A. emeritus faculty member, and Dr. Donald R. Gerth, former president of CSU Dominguez Hills and Sacramento State—reflected on the 50-year relationship between the CSU administration and the Senate which has helped mold policies and formulate academic decisions that have been integral to the success of the CSU.
A panel of past Academic Chairs provided historical perspective on the organization’s accomplishments, and each shared personal challenges they faced as chair and offered advice to future Senate leaders. Additionally, attendees participated in discussion groups to collaborate ideas about how to enhance the Senate’s role in helping the CSU continue to thrive as the people’s university.
