This is probably the laziest piece of op-ed I’ve read on the subject, opening with a rehash of news and speculation reported first in mainstream media (and I include Fox News here) and then lacking a finish, topping it off with a dollop of “there go those liberals again!” Pope Francis is not “our” pope since he is the leader of the Catholic faith, dispensing the word of God as interpreted as by Catholic theology (full disclosure – I’m Jewish and we have “Chief Rabbis” in certain communities only). if the word of the Catholic Church were accepted as pure and immutable there would have been no need of Martin Luther to question it and its practices. That the Church of the 21st century does not completely resemble the Church of Martin Luther’s time only underscores the argument that it is capable of change, and that every Protestant spinoff since then is in effect a liberal interpretation of that theism. To speculate and question how God’s word could be served better is right of every believer, even liberals of faith.
