Beginning August 9, Santa Clarita Transit will launch Route 12, which will travel from the McBean Regional Transit Center to Plum and Whites Canyon. The new service will replace the eastern segment of existing Routes 1 and 2, which currently run from Castaic and Val Verde to Plum and Whites Canyon.
Currently, Routes 1 and 2 follow a shared route from Plum and Whites Canyon until reaching Commerce Center Drive, where they split into two separate routes. Route 1 travels north along the Old Road to Castaic, while Route 2 travels along the 126 to Val Verde. Beginning August 9, Routes 1 and 2 will terminate at the MRTC, where Route 12 will pick up the former path of Routes 1/2 to Plum and Whites Canyon.
“By adding Route 12, Santa Clarita Transit is able to increase frequency, on-time performance and connectivity on Routes 1 and 2,” said Santa Clarita Transit Manager Adrian Aguilar. “Formerly, Routes 1 and 2 alternated trips to and from the MRTC every 30 minutes, with one departure offered every hour for each route. Now, Routes, 1, 2 and 12 will all depart every 30 minutes, allowing for shorter wait times and better connections to other routes departing the MRTC.”
Santa Clarita riders who formerly took Routes 1 and 2 from the west to east side of the valley will now transfer to Route 12 at the MRTC. Riders who formerly took Routes 1/2 from the east to the west side of the valley will now take Route 12 and transfer to Routes 1 and 2 at the MRTC.
Due to the new Route 12 transfer, cross-valley trips on Routes 1, 2 and 12 connecting through the MRTC will cost $2 instead of $1. However, local riders can eliminate the additional cost by purchasing Day Passes ($2.50) or Monthly Passes ($32), which allow unlimited rides on all local routes for one low fare. Seniors 60 and older will not be affected, as they ride Santa Clarita Transit free of charge.
