The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, will conduct a Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety and Enforcement Operation on Monday, August 4, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The operation will begin at Valencia Boulevard and Citrus Drive, and continue at other high-traffic intersections in the City, including Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, and Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon. The operation is designed to enforce pedestrian safety laws and reduce traffic incidents for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the Santa Clarita Valley.
During the operation, deputies will cross major intersections and monitor high volume areas for vehicles not obeying the speed limits or yielding to pedestrians. Deputies will also observe pedestrians and cyclists, and monitor whether or not they are obeying traffic signals and crossing streets safely and legally.
“The City sees an average of two incidents per week involving cyclists and pedestrians, and in the last year alone we saw 50 injury related traffic collisions involving pedestrians on our local roadways,” said Sergeant Rich Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Traffic Unit. “The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department and the City are partnering to conduct a public safety operation that will increase awareness of safety laws and remind pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists how important it is to follow the rules of the road.”
This operation is being held in conjunction with the City’s current public safety campaign: “Respect is a Two-Way Street,” “Be Aware, Stay Alive.” The public awareness campaign is designed to educate residents on the frequency of traffic collisions involving pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and the importance of increasing safety awareness for all residents.
Santa Clarita Valley deputies want to remind both pedestrians and motorists to share the road and follow traffic safety laws in order to reduce injury traffic collisions. Below are a few tips the campaign is promoting:
Pedestrians
• Obey traffic signals such as “Walk/Don’t Walk” signs.
• Cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections if available.
• Watch for turning vehicles and make sure the driver sees you before crossing.
• Make sure the lane is clear or vehicles have stopped before proceeding to cross.
• Wear bright/light colored clothing and walk in well-lit areas at night.
• Be alert to the traffic – constantly look both ways as you cross the street.
Motorists
• Scan the road ahead for pedestrians.
• Do not drive distracted.
• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks whether marked or unmarked.
• Watch for pedestrians stepping off the curb when making right or left turns.
• Obey the speed limits and slow down.

They ought to monitor the pedestrian traffic at Soledad and Shangri La on the south side of the intersection….pedestrians don’t pay attention to the DON’T WALK signs much of the time because the intersection flows right with the sidewalk!

I hope this includes some of the people on bicycles, most just bike right through the crosswalks.
What a surprise. More revenue generating bs from the Sheriffs department.
Operation revenue.
Good. Some people have no regard for pedestrians.
Oh. Goody. Because I just saw someone hit a pedestrian the other day.
You’ve been warned! The city is desperate for revenue. Don’t fall into the trap….
Um most people dont look both ways while driving its a fact dont blame the pedestrian s when its green that means go y do bikes n pedestrians have wait for crosswalk
Police state- here we come!
Good! It is ridiculously dangerous to be a pedestrian in the SCV. They need to move this down to McBean/Magic Mountain instead of Citrus.
Everyone is so focused on barging in front of oncoming traffic that they never check the crosswalk when the light changes.
They just want to make money

Great idea. Monitoring drivers and pedestrians. I just hope you check for jay walkers also.
How about going over to Jakes way or go to newhall and get these gangbanger’s/illegals out of here!
Ummmm what does immigration have to do with pedestrian safety? Some people are just full of it.
How to meet quota 101
We have been in Massachusetts for the last week. They crosswalks are brightly marked in neon yellow/green that “Yield for pedestrians–state law”. We have Walked all of this state in many towns and it’s the same. Felt very safe.
U can tell the uneducated ignorant people from there posts. Obviously they have no clue that pedestrians get hit all the time by speeding cars. I’m sure they have other special task forces for the narco issues and gang issues. Ignorants
Go live in the valley or LA if u don’t like it here.
Well if they are wearing their uniforms. Many folks won’t be driving like psychopaths as they usually do! Also should place a yield for pedestrian sign and blinking lights on the crosswalk on the old road and valencia next to Starbucks! Drivers zoom by there w no chance to stop for a pedestrian if they wanted to….
You’d be surprised what we pay for…!!

This is probably a good idea – getting hit by a car as a pedestrian can kill people. The way people drive in SCV I am actually surprised we don’t have more pedestrians getting killed or badly injured.
I’m glad to see the police are paying attention to this problem – much better than the DUI checkpoints.
