The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation on Sept. 9 in the City of Santa Clarita in an effort to lower deaths and injuries. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur.
Officers will be looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes. They will be cracking down on both those operating regular vehicles and motorcycles who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns, or any other dangerous violation.
Motorcycle fatalities saw a phenomenal drop of 37 percent from 2008 to 2010, but then rose 23 percent by 2012. Operations like this are aimed at curbing any more rises in motorcycle deaths and sending the numbers back downward.
In the area policed by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, there was a 390 percent increase in motorcyclists injured over the last 13 years with 47 injured in 1998 and 184 in 2011. There was a 300 percent increase in motorcyclists killed over the same time period with 2 killed in 1998 and 6 killed in 2011.
California collision data reveals that primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs by both riders and drivers alike. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is also reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.
Riders can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at www.CA-msp.org or 1-877 RIDE 411 or 1-877-743-3411.

This is pure discrimination against motorcyclist. The city can pick on us because most of us are home owners and taxpayers who enjoy motorcycles. Alot easier to deal with than dealing with gang members selling heroin in our schools or illegal alien crime in south central Santa Clarita.
It’s no secret that LASD takes the path of least resistance when it comes to crime fighting. Most motorcyclists that I know are expert at what they do. The kind of experience gained from riding in amongst some of the idiots that drive cars in the SCV.
You can thank your fellow motorcyclists who use the canyon roads as a race track for that. Just ride responsibly and all will be good.
Tuesday September 9th leave you motorcycles in the garage and let this taxpayer funded City of Santa Clarita discrimination money go to waste.
I ride, and DO NOT use the local canyons as a race track. I pay taxes and registration and insurance on all 3 of my vehicles. I do not need to be harassed by the police. Go find a heroine dealer.
I don’t see any problem with that.. they should enforce more officer out there… Most riders are just plain idiots.. that’s why I stopped riding…
Scv cops are crackin down on everyone the bums tuners motorcyclists even muggers on the bike path there on a rampage lol
Plus if everything is good on you’re bike and you got you’re m1 then what’s the problem… If you don’t like it what the cops are doing Hey then don’t ride..
Weaver I’m glad
You are not with us anymore.
Yeah… Shake ’em down for all they’re worth. That’s what cops are for these days.
Typical media reports hyperbole, I get that! However, to me this is profiling and targeted against specific group, just the same as racial profiling and that is a civil rights violation and should not be allowed!
That’s a new one! Riding a motorcycle is not a civil right.
It is civil rights violation when everytime I go out there in wonderful town I always get the stink eye from every pink eyed pig out there on patrol,, they break their neck trying to look and see if they can harass me for speed or any other thing they can think of! I am sick and tired of their mental mind set that they do not like riders and their agenda is to harass us all; now you try tell me that’s it is not a rights violation?? When they assign a special task force to target a specific type of motorist because of flawed data and personal bias against them then that is unacceptable behavior
by any public servant!
