[KHTS] – An injury collision sent seven people to the hospital Monday morning including a 4-year-old boy with severe injuries, CHP officials said.
Cindy Higareda, 21, of Inglewood, was driving a 2002 Honda Odyssey van southbound on Interstate 5, near Biscailuz Drive in Castaic around 5 a.m., “when her vehicle suddenly slowed to a stop in the lane,” according to a CHP report.
Higareda was unable to move the van, which had seven occupants, to the center divider or right shoulder due to the heavy traffic in the surrounding lanes.
Juan Rauda, 62, of Dinuba, was driving a 2005 Ford E-350 van at 65 mph on southbound I-5 in the same lane when he approached Higareda’s stopped vehicle and “failed to realize the vehicle was stopped due to his unsafe speed,” the report states.
Rauda slammed into the back of Higareda’s car.
Southbound traffic was interrupted for about 10 minutes while 4-year-old Gerardo Pescador of Inglewood, was airlifted to Riverside Memorial Hospital.
There were three small children in Higareda’s van; David Alexander, 1, of Inglewood, sustained minor injuries and a 9-month-old infant was uninjured. Alexander was transported to Holy Cross Medical Center.
No arrests were made in the crash, which is still under investigation.
Lissette Higareda was the only occupant of either vehicle not wearing a seatbelt, and she was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries.
Monica Higareda, 18, and Jose Higareda, 54, both of Inglewood, were taken to Henry Mayo with minor injuries.
The affected lanes were all reopened by 6 a.m., according to CHP officials.

Just wondering why they are reporting the driver failed to stop due to unsafe speed when he was going 65 mph? The van broke down in his lane and unfortunately, even if he was going 45 mph, he probably couldn’t have stopped in time. Tragic accident, thankfully everyone survived!
