The College of the Canyons nursing department invites current nursing students and nurses from the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding regions to a special event focused on issues related to patient care and the future of the nursing profession.

The event “What do Nurses Need to Know? Nursing Scope of Practice” will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) located at College of the Canyons.

Serving as the event’s keynote speaker will be Tricia Hunter, R.N., M.N., current Executive Director of the American Nurses Association California and Hearing Healthcare Providers of California.

In her presentation Hunter will cover a range of topics that both current nurses and nursing students need to be aware of regarding safe patient care and other emerging issues related to the nursing profession.

Also scheduled to present is Dr. Mary Foley PhD, R.N., F.A.A.N., a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing.

While Foley’s presentation will be specifically focused on the future of nursing, both presentations will cover nursing from a legislative and nursing practice point of view.

At the conclusion of Hunter’s presentation the two speakers will host a roughly 30-minute Q-and-A session with audience members.

The event “What do Nurses Need to Know? Nursing Scope of Practice” is open to the public. General Admission is free to all local nursing students (identification required).

Current and retired local nurses can purchase tickets for $10. To register to attend the event please visit http://tinyurl.com/THunterPub.

Nursing students planning to attend are reminded that this is a professional nursing event, and are asked to please arrive on time and dressed in professional attire.

The PAC is located on the College of the Canyons Valencia campus at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, in Santa Clarita.

This event is sponsored by a grant from the Song Brown Special Programs Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, with additional grant funding received from the Deputy Sector Navigator Grant of the California Community Colleges Workforce and Economic Development Division, hosted by College of the Canyons.
