SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Over the weekend, The Master’s College men’s track & field team traveled to Westmont College for the GSAC Track & Field Championships.
Starting things off, Andrew Sanchez (Van Nuys, CA) made a statement in both the 200-meter and 400-meter events. Sanchez placed third in the 200-meter event with a time of 22.07 seconds. In the 400-meter, Sanchez finished the event second overall in 49.86. Sanchez’ performances earned him All-GSAC Honors for both events.
In the 800-meter, Skyler Mikesell (Ft. Wayne, IN) kicked with 200 meters to go claiming All-GSAC Honors with a third-place finish in a respectable time of 1:57.94.
The 3000-meter steeplechase featured Michael Sciarra (Orange, CA) who keyed off of the lead runner resulting in a second-place finish along with an impressive time of 9:26.96. Notably, Sciarra’s aggressive effort led to All-GSAC Honors as well as qualifying for the NAIA National Championships.
Josh Sherfey (Stevenson Ranch, CA), who earned a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter event at last year’s conference meet, came into the same race this year with strong confidence in his training. Working alongside Biola’s Kevin Horchler, Sherfey made a move with 800 meters leaving Horchler with no opportunity to outkick him. Along with finishing first with a time of 15:13, Sherfey bagged All-GSAC Honors.
Out of the seven competing GSAC teams, TMC finished sixth with 61 points.
With the NAIA National Championships around the corner, the Mustangs will gear up for the most competitive field of their season on May 21-23 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
