Who in their right mind would take children out into dry brush areas to play with combustible items during a severe drought? School needs to be held accountable and responsible for the cost to fight the fire.

How did they even get a permit for this?
It is a windy day!! Who in the world would consider it wise to shoot flammable objects into the air in the wind near brush in the wind?
Was this supervised by an adult? Who could permit such an activity? This is so irresponsible it is almost humorous but it’s not because the consequences could have been disasterous. There is also the water to be considered, we are in a drought, and the wildlife living in the 5 acres of brush that were burned, are they just expendable because someone did not want to wait for favorable conditions for the experiment? I can’t help but wonder who the teachers were that gave this the green light. Someone needs to be held accountable for this negligence and it’s not the children!

It was the 6th graders from SCVi. My son was part of the group launching. The kids worked really hard on their rockets and waited MONTHS for the permits to do this launch. There was plenty of supervision, many parents were there to share in the excitement. There were MANY successful launches, this one just happened to be fail =(
The kids did an amazing job and learned a lot. We LOVE our school and how excited our kids are to do neat projects like this. You do your best to be safe but accidents can happen in any situation. Thank God no one was hurt. The kids got a real life lesson today.

I am curious why the school should be held accountable if they were given a permit? Maybe the office in charge of permits should be held accountable? I mean, unless the students or teachers did things, or didn’t do things according to the parameters of the permit.
Can you even issue a permit for common sense? Come on people, California, drought, fireworks, oh sorry rocket. As far as lessons learned. I hope they learned just how easy things can go wrong and how expensive it is to fight fires. Common sense, can’t teach that in a book!
If these were Estes rockets (or similar), when ignited, FIRE shoots out of the solid rocket, propelling it into the sky until it burns itself out.
FIRE SHOOTS OUT OF IT.
When they land the rocket is sometimes smoking, sometimes with tiny smoldering remnants inside.
Yes, not a wise idea to do this in an area that is EXTREMELY HIGH FIRE DANGER and on a windy day that can force these small rockets off course.
And not a wise idea for whatever fire agency to have approved it.
Just not wise, but hopefully a teachable moment for everyone involved…
