A 27-year-old woman who attended Saugus High School was sentenced Thursday to two consecutive terms of 25 years to life in state prison for the fatal shooting  of her mother, a onetime teaching assistant in the Hart School District.

Deputy District Attorney Sharon Ransom said Laura L. Purviance pleaded no contest on June 30 to one count of first-degree murder and admitted using a handgun in case LA073342.

On Feb. 13, 2013, Purviance lured her 61-year-old mother, Caroline Purviance, into her bedroom and then shot her in the back of the head, according to evidence presented in court. The defendant then took the victim’s car and fled to Oregon where she was arrested two days later, the prosecutor said.

Caroline Purviance worked for the William S. Hart Union High School District from March 1999 to January 2004. She was hired at Valencia High School as an instructional assistant. She also worked at Saugus and Canyon high schools in the same capacity during her time with the district.

Laura Purviance attended Saugus High for a little over a year before transferring out of the district.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

It is sad when someone is murdered, even sadder when they kill the person who gave them life, how do you murder your own mother? Look closely at this picture and come on all you lazy ass US citizens sitting all day long on your couch collecting unemployment or some kind of state or Government funds, this crime occurred and you know you’ll find a way to blame the border.

  13. So sad, how can someone kill the person who gave them life, you don’t kill your own mother? Look closely at this picture & come on all you lazy ass US citizens sitting on your couch all day watching TV & collecting State or Government funds, you know you’re gonna blame this crime on the border.

I went to Saugus High school in 1994

  19. Terry says:

Laura shot her mother because she was under the delusional impression that her mom had abused her as a child. Laura had long standing psychological problems, according to her sisters. I know this because Laura was living in my house, where the murder occurred. I found her mom’s corpse. I called the LAPD. I had to clean up the blood after the cops left. She stole the gun from her boyfriend’s house while he was at work. She is a profoundly damaged person and I count myself lucky to be alive.

  20. Mimi Hiller says:

Unbelievably sad. I was a good friend of Sue Purviance for many years. She told me about her Laura and so did Laura’s sisters. Laura was always like that, even in her young, formative years. She spent a lot of years in special institutions geared toward helping minors with these kinds of problems. Being very intelligent, she “worked the system,” and was able to fool everyone into thinking she was well.

Fortunately for the rest of us, she will never see the light of day. Out of sight, out of mind. Being an avid fan of “Orange is the New Black,” I feel sorry for her co-inmates, but due to her personality defects, I feel she will be spending most of her time in “the hole.”

Sue, rest in peace. We still love you.
