We have an exciting few months ahead of us as we prepare for Dancing With Our Stars! We are hosting our own Dancing With Our DVC Star event at the Elks Lodge in July. In August, you can come out to the Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons and see the Santa Clarita Valley Dancing With Our Stars event!

Dancing With Our DVC Star – Sally!

Each year the Domestic Violence Center participates in the Santa Clarita “Dancing With Our Stars” event.  This year we are hosting our very own Dancing With Our DVC Star event on July 18. Come out to the Elks Lodge in Canyon Country and enjoy an evening of dancing with our star, Sally.  We will have professional dancers teaching quick tips and basic moves…everything from swing dancing to line dancing to Latin style dancing to hip hop! Then you can dance the night away! Don’t enjoy dancing? Have two left feet? Come out anyway and enjoy an evening of great company and entertainment. Snacks will be provided and drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or at the door. Ticket sales serve as proxy votes for Sally for the SCV Dancing With Our Stars event, which will be held in August. Visit our Facebook page for up-to-date information.

Meet our “Star” Dancer Sally
Sally Van Swearingen is a Santa Clarita local, a make-up artist to Hollywood stars, author of “It’s Not Over Yet!” and our dancing star! Sally has been so supportive of the Domestic Violence Center this year.  With the release of Sally’s new book, she has been donating a portion of the proceeds from her book sales, back to the DVC! This year, we asked Sally if she would support us once again by being our dancing star and of course, she said “YES!” We interviewed Sally to find out more about being a dancer for the event and here’s what she had to say.

Q: Why did you choose the DVC as your charity of choice to dance for this year?

A: DVC has been my charity of choice for all my book launching and signing events. My book, “It’s Not Over Yet” is about ladies not giving up their Beauty Power. Ladies come to a crossroad in their lives and some give up while others recognize that there is more to come…much more! I hope every woman can read my book!

Q: Is this your first year doing Dancing With Our Stars?

A: YES! For many years I have volunteered as make-up artist for the dancers. This year my boyfriend Matt Randall told Linda Davies that I was a dancer, so she asked if I would like to be their dancer this year.

Q: What style dance will you be doing this year?

A: Well it’s a bit of a surprise, but I will tell you that it’s not ALL about ballroom. It will be fun, funky and you will definitely want to get up and dance!

Q: Can you tell me a bit about the work involved in prepping for the event?

A: I have to admit I just started learning my dance last week!  Willy and Ingrid the choreographers, are loaded up with 22 dancers this year! So because I have dance training they asked me to wait a bit until the others could get started. Now I’m practicing every day to catch up! There is so much to it. You need first to learn the basic choreography of the dance, then work with your partner to be in sync, then finally polish it and make it your own. That’s the toughest part. I’m a bit scared because I haven’t performed as a dancer in many years, but I love the challenge and I love why I am doing this!

Q: Do you make your own costumes?

A: I’m so excited and honored because my friend, couture dress designer Gheri Legree of JonJeri Designs, is designing my costume. It will be amazing!
Q: Can you tell me a little about your book?

A: My book, “It’s Not Over Yet!: Reclaiming your Real Beauty Power in Your 40s ,50s and Beyond,” is all about empowering women! It is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.com I am encouraging women to not give up their Beauty Power!

“DVC and I have a very similar vision for women…It’s Not Over Yet!” – Sally Van Swearingen

Santa Clarita Valley Dancing With Our Stars

Each year the Santa Clarita Valley hosts a Dancing With Our Stars event and this year we are lucky enough to have our good friend Sally representing the Domestic Violence Center! Non-profits from all over the Santa Clarita Valley have a local SCV “star” represent their organization.  The non-profit star is paired with a professional dancer and the dancing duos compete for the most votes. Votes can be purchased by proxy for $25 a vote.  Votes can be submitted before and during the event and you can vote as many times as you want! A vote for Sally would be a vote for the Domestic Violence Center! At the end of the evening, the star with the most votes wins a cash prize for their non-profit! All votes for Sally would go directly back to the Domestic Violence Center. For more information about the event itself, you can visit their website http://www.scvdwos.com/. To Vote for Sally you can click here to go to our website. To purchase tickets to attend the event you can click here.

Mobilizing Communities

Last month our Program Assistant, Lexi, went up to Sacramento and attended a conference called Mobilizing Communities to Promote Healthy Relationships. Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence organizations from all over California were represented. The conference focused on how to increase youth involvement in the promotion of healthy relationships. Representatives from the various organizations were able to speak to the groups about needs in their communities and offer suggestions on how to make changes in our communities. There were also several groups of youths, under the age of 18, who spoke about events they have set up in their communities to promote healthy relationships. The conference also focused on the Close to Home model and how to initiate this program in our communities.  Lexi was able to bring home a lot of great ideas that the DVC will be working on in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates on our Close to Home project with the local high schools. Thanks Lexi for attending and representing the Domestic Violence Center of SCV! We look forward to working with the young people in our community to promote healthy relationships.
