Empowering youth to combat substance abuse is a top priority for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. As part of a pilot program, Deputy William Velek of the Juvenile Intervention Team (J-Team) is launching a series of teen education classes that will teach youths in our community “The Truth About Drugs.”
“We can tell our kids not to use drugs, but that doesn’t work in high school anymore,” Deputy Bill Velek said. “If kids truly understand how dangerous drugs really are, then they would choose not to use them.”
Some of the topics covered in the ten-week program include: The Truth about Ecstasy, The Truth about Heroin, and The Truth about Crystal Meth and Methamphetamine. The final session will be a graduation class with the presentation of a certificate and the signing of a Youth Drug-Free World Pledge. The curriculum will be taught using a mixture of lectures, video presentations, group discussions, reading and short worksheets. The course was designed and published by drugfreeworld.org.
The classes will meet on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., beginning Wednesday, September 9, 2015, and concluding on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. All classes will be held at the City of Santa Clarita’s Activities Center, Canyons Room A/B, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway.
The program is limited to the first 20 applicants. Applicants must be high school students, grades 9-12, and live in the Santa Clarita Valley. A parent/guardian approval is needed and applicants must not be involved in any criminal process or have felony convictions. All applications are subject to approval of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
For additional information or to request an application, please contact Deputy William Velek at 661-799-5163, or you may email him at wrvelek@lasd.org.

Is that a pookie
Yeah what’s left of one haha
I hope recovering teens are a part of this program. Adults lecturing teens isnt very effective, even when you are telling them how bad drugs are. They need to hear it from other teens that have been through it.
?thought the same thing!
Why aren’t teens in the criminal process or with felony convictions included? Makes no sense to me…they’re the ones paying the price and are in the same age range for these kids to listen to…
Foundation for a Drug Free World and and The Truth About Drugs are scientology programs! The scientologists are sneaky and don’t let participants know. For these programs, L. Ron Hubbard pulled the “science” about addiction and addictive substances out of his behind. Not only are these programs filled with misinformation, they are used by scientology to get close to our kids for recruitment. Keep the scientolgists, their quack science and cult brainwashing away from our kids!
It is disappointing that the sherif’s department did not research this program before they approved it. They should know to check these things out before putting them in front of our kids.
