The Department of Regional Planning is pleased to announce the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance on Sept. 1, 2015. It becomes effective on Oct. 1, 2015.
Beginning on Oct. 1, 2015, the Department of Regional Planning may accept nomination applications to designate landmarks and historic districts located in the unincorporated communities of Los Angeles County.
The Historic Preservation Ordinance is intended to promote, protect, enhance, and preserve property of historic, architectural, and cultural importance. It will allow interested persons to nominate landmarks or historic districts located in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
Once the Historical Landmarks Commission (and the Regional Planning Commission for historic districts) holds a public hearing and has determined that the property meets the criteria for designation, the commission may recommend to the Board of Supervisors that the property be designated. The Board of Supervisors may then officially designate and list the property on the County Register of Landmarks and Historic Districts. The criteria for designation and the process for considering nominations for designation are set forth in the historic preservation ordinance.
The adopted ordinance, process flowcharts, nomination forms and instructions can be reviewed and downloaded from the Department of Regional Planning website at http://planning.lacounty.gov/preservation
Note: This county Historic Preservation Ordinance is applicable only to property located in the unincorporated communities of Los Angeles County. For property located within an incorporated city, please contact that city’s office of historic preservation or planning department for information.
