1906 - Bercaw General Store opens in Surrey (Saugus) [story]

A newborn baby girl came into the world and into the hands of a surprised deputy sheriff in a Santa Clarita Valley car wash parking lot Wednesday morning.  The excited father stood side by side with the deputy as his daughter made her unexpected arrival.

A motorist urgently shouted “Baby! Baby!” at Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Bertola as he followed the car into a Canyon Country parking lot on Soledad Canyon Road Wednesday morning.  The deputy soon learned there was a woman in the car in labor when he saw the woman in distress and heard the father-to-be say “she is having her baby now!”

babydeputy090915Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputy Bertola immediately radioed for Los Angeles County firefighters and assured the couple the paramedics were on their way.  Bertola soon found out the baby girl was in a big hurry.

While still encased in its amniotic sac, the baby began to crown.  Bertola tenderly guided the baby as it was pushed out and the sac broke. Bertola gently tapped the baby girl on the back, and helped clear her airway.  He said the baby took a deep breath and started crying at about 7:17 a.m.

While Deputy Bertola is a proud parent of three of his own children, he said this is the first baby he has delivered.

Deputy Bertola said, “At first, I was trying to help the mother get comfortable but she made it very clear she didn’t want me to recline the front seat, and I certainly wasn’t about to debate anything with her.”  He added that once the baby was born, “The parents were so excited and happy.  The father was jumping up and down and overjoyed.”

Because this was an “en-caul” birth, the mother’s water did not break, so there was less warning for mother and father alike.

Shortly after the arrival of the baby, the firefighters and an ambulance arrived at the scene.  The ecstatic new mom and baby were transported to a local hospital, where they are both reportedly to be in good health.
