Santa Clarita Valley teenager Ryan Orozco will lead a group of volunteers to renovate the visiting area of the Los Angeles County Castaic Animal Shelter this weekend as an Eagle Scout project.
It’s the last requirement Ryan needs to secure the rank. Afterward, he’ll undergo an order of review, in which BSA leaders go over his experience and what he has learned from Scouting.
His career with the organization goes back 10 years, when he joined as a Cub Scout. Only 5 percent of Boy Scouts earn the prestigious rank of the Eagle Scout Award.
“I want to get (my Eagle Scout award) before I turn 16,” he explained.
The Castaic Animal Shelter, located at 31044 North Charlie Road, will be getting newly installed turf, trees and benches to create an area for people to play with animals prior to adoption.
All of the materials were donated by the Santa Clarita Lowes store.
“The manager was really kind, he surprised me and donated everything I needed,” said Ryan. “He was really generous.”
Ryan said that he has been working hard to get volunteers since learning of the time frame he would have to work under, about two weeks ago. Friends, family and troop members have all signed up to help him complete the restoration.
About 15-20 volunteers will be working from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
As for community volunteers, Ryan is welcome to more help in completing the project.
“If they want to help,” he said, “that would be great.”
