[ANF] – Saturday marks the first anniversary of President Obama’s designation of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, giving further protection to 346,177 acres of land within the Angeles and San Bernardino national forests.
In year one, the Forest Service and a coalition of partners have made significant strides toward accomplishing common goals. Together, we have implemented a Field Ranger Program to increase visitor contacts on trails and along roads, and at visitor centers. Recreation facilities and opportunities have been increased through restoration of trail bridges, clearance of overgrown trails, and improvements to restrooms, picnic areas, and parking.

Moreover, vital staffing needs have been met by hiring a partnership coordinator, a volunteer coordinator, visitor information specialists and a full-time trash truck driver. In June, the Forest Service held a series of public meetings to seek public comments regarding development of the Monument Management plan, which needs to be completed within the next two years.
While this Saturday marks the one-year anniversary, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Coca-Cola, National Forest Foundation, Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, San Gabriel Mountains Forever, Watershed Conservation Authority, San Gabriel Partnership Fund and special guest Congresswoman Judy Chu, will be conducting a One Year Anniversary – Celebratory Call to Action event and work restoration project, on Oct. 16, in the Oaks Picnic Area within the Monument. A weekday was selected to conduct the celebration and restoration event to avoid disrupting visitors by project work in the Oaks Picnic area over the Columbus holiday weekend.
