Laemmle Theatre Project Up for Review, Vote Tuesday

The Santa Clarita City Council will conduct a public hearing Tuesday on the proposed Laemmle Theatre project and the accompanying mixed-use development and parking structure in Old Town Newhall.

The city and its former redevelopment agency purchased the square block at the southeast corner of Lyons Avenue and Main Street in 2008 for the purpose of redeveloping it with a theater, which had been in the council-approved plans for Newhall since 2005. Finally in 2013, the city solicited bids from 100 potential developers. There were five responses, of which two conformed with the plans for the site.

Of those two, the proposal by Laemmle Theatres and its developer partner, Serrano Development Group, was identified by city staff, a professional consultant and a City Council subcommittee as closest to the city’s goals for the property.

In July 2015, following a public hearing in which 20 members of the public testified in favor of opening exclusive negotiations with Laemmle and Serrano – and none testified against it – the council voted to open the negotiations.

On Tuesday night, the council will hear the results of those negotiations, listen to public testimony and potentially modify and vote on the proposal.

City staff released details about the project on Thursday, as detailed below.

    they want city money to fund it —nope find another player –we can shop for a better merchant to have at that PRIME local!

    read the plans they want 3.5 million of your tax dollars —then charge you to see a movie –ya right!

    I would be curious to know if the 20 people who spoke in favor of opening negotiations with Laemmle knew that the city would have to pay over $3 million to make the project a reality (let along $18 million for a parking structure). Granted the parking would be available for other businesses, but would the high cost of construction mean that there would be a charge for parking? I can’t wait until Tuesday to hear more about this costly proposal.

    Yes the city should fund the parking structure. It could be a source of revenue in the future. This is not funding for the buildings that will be on site. If you had attended any of the previous redevelopment meetings for Old Town Newhall in the last 15 years, you would have seen plans for 2 City funded parking structures in the mix. I want our tax dollars to work for us. Now!

    Hi! Delivering lower budget art films in a great location is very expensive. The big theaters have many benefits that small theaters like Laemmle do not have. The city is subsidizing this project because it will keep ticket prices reasonable which will bring feet to Old Town Newhall and result in business to the surrounding merchants.
