The Castaic Union School District has named Karen Cowell Teacher of the Year for her outstanding service to not only the school district, but to her students as well.
Cowell has been with the school district for 14 years and through all of the ups and downs says there is no better district.
“The kids come first,” she said. “To be honest there are a lot of teachers who deserve this kind of award from coming to work everyday and doing what’s best for the kids.”

The Castaic Middle School teacher has taught everything from history to ELA during her time in the district. She currently is developing two new courses, culinary arts and a technology pathways class.
Innovation and creativity are the key when it comes to creating new courses and it can be stressful when trying to develop curriculum that covers common core.
“I never do the same exact lesson twice because there’s always a way to refine it,” Cowell said. “You have a different class every year different set of students with different needs. How boring and unproductive it is to do the same exact thing every year, I would be so bored. I am always trying to tweak it or try something new.”
