Sounds of rhythm and blues came to Canyon High School Friday as several school bands performed at the first Canyon Jazz Festival.
Twelve bands from nine different schools, including the UCLA Jazz Orchestra, gathered at Canyon High’s newly opened Performing Arts Center on April 22 to compete for awards and accolades.
“It’s something we’ve always wanted to do but we never had the facility to do,” said Canyon High School Director of Instrumental Music Stephen Hufford. “I knew the second (the Performing Arts Center) opened, we had to have our first annual Jazz Festival.”
Jazz bands and ensembles from Sierra Vista, Littlerock, Golden Valley and other high schools took to the stage, performing a variety of styles ranging from swing, ballads and funk.
The festival ended on the special guest performance by UCLA Jazz Orchestra.
Hufford expressed his hope that the high school students gathered at the festival would be inspired to continue their music careers well into college.
“I want the students – especially my students – to be able to hear other bands and to know that other schools are playing great music and doing great things with music education,” said Hufford.
“My big thing was hoping the students would be able to see that after high school that they can also go on to the college level and do the same thing and play in a jazz band as well,” he added.
