The Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains National Monument are hosting Trail Artist program beginning May 6, featuring painters and photographers producing artistic renderings of areas near the Pacific Crest Trail.
The artists will be stationed at Big Pines Lodge near Wrightwood and at various trail camps in May and June, which coincides with the high season for PCT through-hikers on their journey north to Canada.
Each will spend one week working on visual projects, including works to be donated to the Angeles for public display at local visitor centers. In addition, they will serve as points of public contact in remote locations, offering forest information for hikers.
Participating artists include Liz Garrison (painting and multimedia), Thomas Haraikawa (photography), Amy Nettleton (painting), Steve Anderson (photography), and Lisa Ann Mahony (painting).
In the past two years, Angeles staff have observed a significant increase in long-distance hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail, which stretches from Mexico to Canada and passes through the Angeles and Monument. Forest officials believe the increase will provide more opportunities for the artists to interact with the public.
The Trail Artists program is preceded by last year’s Artist in Residence program, in which several artists resided for a week near Crystal Lake. Each artistically produced forest scenes in a variety of mediums and later displayed them in a group art show near downtown Los Angeles.

I hope some of the photos or drawings/paintings will be available online. The one photo used to illustrate this article is beautiful and I’d love to see more.
