Saugus Union School District now has three Title I Achieving Schools and two Exemplary Arts Schools to add to the growing list of awards and accolades garnered from multiple sources over the course of the academic year.
The awards, announced by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, reflect the success that SUSD schools are having, in spite decreased funding for the arts, as well as the hard work put in at all levels at Title I schools.
Selected for Exemplary Arts recognition are West Creek Academy and Rosedell Elementary, who were among only 35 schools selected by the California Department of Education.
“I’m delighted to honor these schools and programs, which are doing a tremendous job preparing our students for 21st century opportunities and graduating lifelong learners in the process,” Torlakson said.
“We could not be any more thrilled for these additional awards,” said Dr. Joan Lucid, Superintendent at Saugus Union School District. “The arts are so important for a well-rounded educational experience and we are very proud of West Creek and Rosedell’s ability to raise the bar for their students.”
Lauded as Title I Achieving Schools are Cedarcreek Elementary, Rio Vista Elementary and Skyblue Mesa Elementary. This distinction is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds that aid in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty level.
“Our Title I schools have always responded to the needs of our district’s economically challenged families,” said Judy Umeck, President of the SUSD Governing Board. “Addressing these issues while providing a quality education requires thoughtful strategies. These awards prove that we are more than up to the challenge and that all students can succeed when given the opportunity and a few extra tools!”
