[US Forest Service] – The fire is 100 percent contained at 41,432 acres. Current resources include 250 total personnel, 7 hand crews, 10 engines, 3 helicopters, 4 water tenders, and 4 dozers.
An area, road, and trail closure is in effect on the Angeles National Forest (Forest Closure Order 01-16-05). The Pacific Crest Trail is closed where it passes through the area closure.
Temporary Flight Restriction: The temporary flight restriction for the Sand Fire has been lifted.
Road Closures: Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has closed a section of Sand Canyon Road that is affected by the Sand Fire. According to the Los Angeles County sheriffs staffing the closure, residents with photo ID will be allowed in. Visit the Department of Public Works’ road closures webpage for a map and the most up-to-date information.
Smoke & Air Quality: Although the fire is producing minimal smoke, local communities may receive smoke from fires north of the area. Inversions will continue to keep some smoke lingering in the valleys. Air-quality levels are expected to remain at good and moderate in areas adjacent to the fire. Air-quality conditions are subject to change depending on wind and fire activity. I’m glad to see that there are still a few crews including choppers hanging around. There are still a hand-full of stumps, and other smoldering brush up on the mountains sending out smoke that is visible from the 14 fwy headed south.
It’s gonna be a long time before this valley (on the eastside, anyway) looks the way it did two weeks ago.
And probably just as long a time before we ever get a chance to go up into the back country again.
