The Master’s University women’s soccer team upended No. 23 Carroll College 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Atherton on the campus of Menlo College.
With the win, the Lady Mustangs’ 2016 record improved to 1-1-1.
TMU got on the board two minutes and 31 seconds into play after Michaela Rickard (Santa Clarita, CA) scored on a penalty kick.
At the 55:55 mark, the Lady Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 after Hailey Gomillion (Lancaster, CA) scored off an assist from Kayla Peterson (Federal Way, WA).
Carroll managed to score at the 80:33 mark when Payton Netz capitalized on an assist from Alison Zimmerman.
Fortunately, TMU’s stingy defense kept the Saints quiet in the final 10 minutes of play, securing its first win of the 2016 campaign.
Attesting to the tight contest, both teams posted four shots and four shots on goal. Notably, TMU’s Jessica Zubia (Bakersfield, CA) tallied three saves.
“It was good to get our first win and our first goals of the season,” commented TMU head coach Curtis Lewis. “We had some moments of good possession and pressed well to disrupt their offense. If we can continue to grow in our willingness and ability to keep the ball, we will have some success this year. I’m proud of Michaela Rickard as she stepped up to the penalty kick mark and buried it to give us the lead. I’m also proud of Hailey Gomillion as he she scored a great goal off a corner kick in the second half. We made a silly communication mistake to let them back in the game late, but we were able to lock things down and grind it out for the win.”
Next weekend, TMU travels to Prescott, Ariz., for a tournament hosted by Embry-Riddle University. On Saturday, the Lady Mustangs will square off against receiving-votes MidAmerica Nazarene (KS) at 7:00 p.m., and then play No. 24 Embry-Riddle on Monday at 10 a.m.
