The College of the Canyons men’s soccer came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chaffey College on Tuesday in the team’s home opener at Cougar Stadium.
COC head coach Phil Marcellin and the Cougars entered the contest without a win, but seemed determined to change that stat vs. Chaffey (3-2-1).
Canyons (1-3) was able to control the Panthers’ offensive attack, despite being outshot 21-7 in the game.
But with the right mix of strong defense, some big saves by goalkeeper Cristian Arriaga and a timely goal by freshmanJoshua Ausherman, the Cougars found the result they were looking for.
Ausherman’s goal came in the 48th minute off a rebound deep in the Panthers’ zone, and provided a key momentum swing for a team that had scored just once over the first three games.
Meanwhile, Arriaga (1-3-1) was outstanding in goal, making eight saves on the night.
Elsewhere, the Canyons defensive unit led by Austen Scheff, Anthony Salvadori, Adam Aristo, Kevin Rivas and Luis Arriaga were effective in disrupting several Chaffey scoring opportunities.
Canyons will play two more home games in Cougar Stadium this week. The Cougars are set to host Hartnell College at 10 a.m. on Friday, before Cosumnes River comes to town for a 3 p.m. match on Sunday.
