The Master’s University women’s soccer team posted its third shutout victory of the season after beating Arizona Christian 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Phoenix.

With the win, the Lady Mustangs’ 2016 record improved to 7-4-3 and 3-2-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

TMU’s first goal of the day was scored by Kaylee Poffek after she connected with an assist from Sierra Carrasco with four seconds left in the first half (44:56).

Shortly after intermission at the 53:01 mark, Lynnae George scored off a Haley Gomillion assist, giving TMU a 2-0 advantage.

TMU’s defense held strong for the rest of the second half, securing the Lady Mustangs’ seventh win of the season.

Janae Garcia, Anna Brazil, Sierra Carrasco, and Whitney Gomillion each posted two shots against the Firestorm. Defensively, Jessica Zuba made one save over the course of the 90 minute tilt.

Collectively, TMU out-shot ACU 15-5, and posted eight shots on goal.

“Kaylee Poffek scored her first collegiate goal today with four seconds remaining in the first half on a great dish from Sierra Carrasco, and credit to our backline to holding their leading goal scorer to one shot all game,” commented TMU head coach Curtis Lewis. “We had much more possession in the second half, and even though we didn’t have as many shots, we played much better. In our last 10 games we are 6-2-2, so we are finding ways to win.”

Now, the Lady Mustangs prepare for their final four matches of the regular-season — three of which will take place on Reese Field.

Next week, TMU hosts a pair of matches against William Jessup on Thursday at 3:00 p.m., and Menlo College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. On October 25, TMU will play in their final home match of the season when they take on No. 11 Westmont College at 3:00 p.m. TMU will then compete in its regular-season finale against No. 9 Vanguard University on October 29 at 12:30 p.m. in Costa Mesa.

The Master’s University men’s soccer team scored early and often in its 5-1 victory over Arizona Christian University on Saturday in Phoenix.

With the win, TMU’s 2016 record improved to 8-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Zach Klindworth put TMU on the scoreboard first at the 5:19 mark by scoring an unassisted goal.

12 minutes later (17:06), Mustang midfielder Benjamin Tembo also scored an unassisted goal, giving TMU a 2-0 advantage.

At the 21:38 mark, Humphrey Mahowa scored off a Klindworth assist, extending TMU’s lead to 3-0.

Just two minutes later (23:07), Mahowa posted his second goal of the day, this time in unassisted fashion.

The Firestorm’s lone goal came from Luis Tapia at the 72:28 mark.

Finally, with nearly 14 minutes left in the half (76:37), Mustang defender Christopher Logan answered ACU’s goal by scoring TMU’s fourth unassisted goal.

Mahowa paced TMU with seven shots and three shots on goal, while Elijah Paniagua posted four shots and three shots on goal. Notably, Klindworth also fired four shots and two shots on goal. Defensively, Mustang goalkeepers Kyle Cunningham and Casey Phillips each grabbed one save.

Collectively, TMU out-shot the Firestorm 24-10, and eclipsed ACU’s three shots on goal with 14.

“We came out ready to play despite the trip to Arizona and the heat,” commented TMU head coach Jim Rickard. “We scored four goals in the first 23 minutes, but then seemed to lose our precision. We are still happy to get a win against a solid team who is struggling with injuries.”

Now, the Mustangs prepare for their final four matches of the regular-season – three of which will take place on Reese Field.
