Tip of the Week: What is a Catalytic Converter?

A Catalytic Converter is part of your vehicle’s exhaust system. The converter captures harmful particles which would otherwise pollute the air, and burns them off using heat from the exhaust. It is located beneath the vehicle between the exhaust manifold and muffler. Catalytic converters can be extremely expensive, costing between $1,000.00 – $3,000.00 to replace. So why are they stolen? Catalytic converters contain precious metals, to include platinum. Thieves who steal these items usually take them to recyclers or sell them to less-than-honest repair shops. So how do you protect yourself from having your catalytic converter stolen? Whenever possible, bark your vehicle inside your garage and lock your door. If this is not an option, try to park in a well-lit area. Special protective shields can also be purchased which cover the converter and make it difficult to access.
Take care, and be safe.
