America Recycles Day is coming up on November 15. It’s a great time to think about how far we’ve come and how we can still do better.
Household chemicals, E-waste and other hazardous waste can be taken to a mobile collection event. There happens to be one on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at College of the Canyons – 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the national recycling rate is more than five times higher than it was in the 1960s. Recycling has come a long way; from the types of materials we recycle to the amount of materials being diverted from the landfills.
Today, materials that are collected from curbside recycling carts and bins are sent to a recovery facility that sorts, separates, and bundles according to type. Then the material is sent to be reused by manufacturers to make new items or packaging.
Here are a few recycling reminders:
All bottles, cans, cardboard and paper can be recycled
Before you place items in the recycling cart or bin, make sure they are clean and dry
Bring your one-time use plastic bags to the grocery store to recycle them
Household batteries can be recycled at any Santa Clarita Library, Community Center, or at City Hall
Syringes must be properly disposed of by using an official mail-in sharps container (obtained by contacting Waste Management) or by dropping them in the container located in front of the Sheriff’s Station at 23740 Magic Mountain Parkway
If you have any questions about where to take things or what can be recycled, please go to GreenSantaClarita.com or call 661-286-4098. Take the America Recycles Day pledge today and encourage others to recycle.
