An abandoned and overturned big rig carrying cardboard boxes was found by California Highway Patrol officers Tuesday evening.
CHP officers were dispatched to the rig around 10:21 p.m.on the shoulder of the I-5 southbound, north of McBean Parkway. When officers arrived, the rig was unoccupied.
Air support was brought in to search for the driver.
Around 11:30 p.m. a 911 call came in reporting a “a Hispanic male with a black shirt and no shoes and a laceration on his head ask if he could use (the reporting person’s) phone,” according to a CHP report.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the hurt driver.
CHP officers arrested the man shortly after midnight based on “n the objective signs of intoxication, and the driver fleeing the scene of a collision,” according to the report.
The driver was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Once he was released, he was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The right two lanes of the southbound I-5 were opened around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.
