1934 - Bouquet Canyon Reservoir, replacement for ill-fated St. Francis Dam & reservoir, begins to fill with water [story]
Bouquet Reservoir

We are in month two of 2017—and if your New Year’s resolution was to get active, it is not too late to do it! Fortunately for you, the City of Santa Clarita offers an abundance of open space for hiking and biking, and recreation classes for all ages. So you have no excuse for not making 2017 your most active year yet!

For those who like to get their exercise on two-wheels, our bike network now has over 115 miles available for your riding pleasure. That is 30 miles of on-street bike lanes/routes, 38 miles of paved bike paths and for those off-road adventurers—47 miles of natural paths. Our City also boasts 34 parks for a total of 392 developed park acres and nearly 9,000 acres of open space. You can plan your next ride by checking out the mobile-friendly interactive maps at BikeSantaClarita.com. If you like to explore on foot, HikeSantaClarita.com has trail maps, event information and safety tips.

If you prefer more organized activities, check out the robust menu of recreation offerings. The City has classes for all ages and all abilities. Babies and toddlers can get involved in everything from tumbling to hip-hop and karate. Older kids can sign up for Youth Sports including tennis, t-ball or basketball. Adults can get in on the fun with pickleball, basketball, softball, volleyball and much more. For those over 50, Club 50 offers low-impact fitness options including water exercise and walking groups.

We believe everyone should have the chance to be active, and the City offers adaptive classes for participants with disabilities in order to make that possible. These classes feature modified activities that are safe, fun and therapeutic. For a full list of all classes, please visit Santa-Clarita.com/Seasons.

Runners, if you are looking for a unique race, get ready for the Wings for Life World Run – where the finish line catches you. For more information on the May 7, 2017 race, visit WingsforLifeWorldRun.com. It is never too soon to get that marathon training underway. The Santa Clarita Marathon, an official qualifier for the Boston Marathon, will be back on Sunday, November 5, 2017. For more information, please visit SCMarathon.org.

Make 2017 the year you get active and enjoy all the natural beauty and recreational activities our City has to offer.

Best regards,

Ken Striplin
