College of the Canyons took a 1-1 tie into the seventh inning vs. Fullerton College on Tuesday, before allowing six runs in a decisive eighth inning that gave the Hornets an eventual 7-1 victory.
Canyons (5-4) entered the game winners of five straight, but had not played in nearly a week due to a rash of inclement weather throughout the region.
COC lefty Jacob Lopez got the start and proceeded to throw six and 1/3 innings of one-run ball, while scattering five hits.
The Hornets (8-3) managed to put together back-to-back-to-back singles against Lopez in the fourth inning which brought home a Fullerton run before the freshman was able to induce an inning ending double play.
In the home half of the fourth sophomore catcher Anthony Lepre led off the inning with solo home run that tied the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately, COC couldn’t muster up any more offense, with the Cougar lineup producing just four hits on the day.
COC freshman outfielder Cole Kleszcz was 2-for-4 with a double, and has now hit safely in all but one game this season.
Canyons reliever Connor Dreyer took the loss after being charged with five runs, but only three earned, in his inning of work. Dreyer also recorded three strikeouts.
Also pitching out of the Cougar bullpen were Cole Bygum and Kris Keach. Bygum allowed one run in his 2/3 inning of work.
The Cougars return to action vs. Cerritos College at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, in a game originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18. That contest was first rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 20, but had to be postponed a second time due to weather.
