Brian Mundell blasted a two-run go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, and Lancaster’s bullpen held on to deliver a 5-4 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Sunday afternoon at Recreation Park.
Alexander Guillen tossed a scoreless eighth inning, and Huascar Brazoban pitched a perfect ninth for the second day in a row to earn his fourth save.
Brendan Rodgers hit a solo home run in the third inning to get the JetHawks (14-17) on the board first. It was his first home run of the season.
The lead was plenty early on for starter Trey Killian (4-0). The right-hander did not allow a hit and faced the minimum over the first five innings, tossing just 53 pitches.
Visalia (17-14) rallied for the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After the JetHawks left the bases loaded without scoring a run in the top half of the inning, the Rawhide broke up the no-hitter on the first pitch of the sixth inning when Henry Castillo lined a base-hit to right field. Daniel Lockhart and Matt McPhearson each followed with singles to tie the game, 1-1.
The Rawhide added three moreMundell attempted to throw home but Lockhart slid around catcher Chris Rabago. Jason Morozowski proceeded to hit a dribbler in front of the mound. Killian tried to flip the ball to home plate with his glove but didn’t field it cleanly. Marty Herum delivered the fourth run with a RBI-single.
The JetHawks got two runs back in the top of the seventh. Rabago walked against Jake Barrett, who was pitching for Visalia on a rehab assignment, and stole second base. With two outs, Garrett Hampson reached on an infield single, and Rabago scored when Alcantara’s throw got away from first base for an error. Rodgers, the next batter, reached on an infield single and Hampson scored when the third baseman Henry Castillo threw wildly to first.
Sam Hilliard led off the eighth inning with a walk against Bud Jeter (0-2) and Mundell followed with the go-ahead home run. The JetHawks handed Jeter his first blown save of the season in 10 tries.
Killian finished by tossing a season-high 7 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and walk.
The JetHawks return home after an off day to host the Modesto Nuts on Tuesday at The Hangar. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
